Protection Paladin Guide Sunday, August 31, 2008

(This is a work in progress!!!)

Hi guys, Just thought I would pull together some helpful links and information about playing and gearing a protection paladin.

Mitigation:
The most important thing about playing a Protection paladin is knowing how the attack tables work.
You can find information on that here: http://www.wowwiki.com/...
When you are hit by a mob a dice is rolled and There are 7 possible (in PvE) outcomes:

Miss
Dodge
Parry
*Glancing Blow (only players and pets versus mobs)
Block
Critical (2.0X damage)
Crushing Blow (mobs only) (1.5X damage)
ordinary hit (1.0X damage)

As a paladin you require 102.4% total avoidance (While Holy Shield is active) in order to be uncrushable
Your Avoidance = the chance bosses miss you(5%) + the chance your dodge + parry + block.

You can easily calculate your total avoidance/blocking with the following macro, assuming you have 5/5 Anticipation:

/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Need 102.4 combined avoidance. Currently at:",0.8,0.8,1)
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(GetDodgeChance()+GetBlockChance()+GetParryChance()+5+(GetCombatRating(CR_DEFENSE_SKILL)*150/355 + 20)*0.04,1,0.5,0)

You will just be an off-tank until you are able to attain 102.4% avoidance & 492 def.

2.4 Defense Rating = 1 Defense = .04 Miss/Doge/Parry/Block

18.9 Dodge Rating = 1% Dodge

31.5 Parry Rating = 1% Parry

7.9 Block Rating = 1% Block

25 Agility = 1% Dodge

Threat:
All that avoidance wont mean diddly if you can't hold onto the mob your tanking.
while Warriors hold aggro with innate threat skills, Druids hold aggro through high physical damage dealt alongside innate threat multipliers.
Paladins hold aggro through multiple spell damage sources and stacking threat multipliers.

The amount of spell damage needed depends on your group's dps. In general, 200-250 is good enough for a Karazhan raid, 300-350 is needed for a SSC/TK raid, and 400+ for a Hyjal/BT raid. Spell damage weapons should be used(sorry casters). +40 spell damage enchant and [Superior Wizard Oil] make just about any lvl 70 spell damage weapon viable for tanking.

Other stats that improve threat production include expertise rating, hit rating(if you miss you can't do holy damage with SoR or SoV (Hit rating also effects Righteous Defense and Avengers shield.)), and spell hit (only effects the FIRST tick of consecration, this stat is almost useless). Spell critical rating is not very important, as many of the tankadins damaging abilities cannot crit. Haste rating is simply useless.

A common misconception is tankadins need to stack intellect to ensure a good mana pool for threat generation. This is not true. Tankadins do not care about how much intellect their gear has. 4000-5000 mana is enough for tankadins from Karazhan to Black Temple. Tankadins can easily replenish their mana pool with Spiritual Attunement. mp5 or spirit are something that tankadins do not need or want, it is a waste of stats.

All of the following tanking abilities are increased by the Paladins spell damage, although coefficients do apply:

Avenger's Shield does 494 to 602 and jumps, to three targets. It also will daze those targets.
Exorcism does 619 to 691 damage to a single undead or demon target at up to 30 yards.
A target that has Judgment of the Crusader on it will have its Holy damage taken increased by up to 219.
Seal of Righteousness adds Holy damage to each swing of the Paladin's weapon.
Judgment of Righteousness does 208 to 228 Holy Damage.
Holy Shield, when activated, does 155 Holy Damage per block.
Consecration is a 10-yd AOE doing 512 Holy Damage per target over 8 seconds.
Retribution Aura does 26 when struck and Blessing of Sanctuary does 46 upon a block.
Avenging Wrath is available every 3 minutes and increases all damage done by the Tankadin by 30% for 20 seconds.
Blessing of Sacrifice is available every 30 seconds, and transfers 45-104 damage per hit from the target to the tankadin for 20 seconds.

Thats it???:
There isn't really much more to explain; assuming you know how to push and what buttons to push. if you have 102.4% avoidance, and have enough spell damage to comfortably hold aggro start stacking on the +stam and become a meat sheild for BT/hyjal.

Gems:
as long as you have 492 Defense... +stamana and + dodge. period. end of story.
